I found your book fascinating. I don't usually read "hard philosophy" books -- "hard science" is easier on my kind of brain -- but yours has helped me understand some things I had previously grasped only intuitively. I always knew, for example, that 19th century psychological lab experiments such as those of Helmholtz -- while certainly bringing intriguing physiological factoids to light -- would never in themselves lead to insights into human nature of the sort I was interested in: why do men wage war, what would it take to love thy neighbor, how can we cure humanity of religion. The more deeply committed these "lab shrinks" became to their career paths, the less they seemed to offer in the way of human wisdom, instead prattling on "more and more about less and less" (in Will Durant's phrase). I love this passage from page 66: "Science undertakes the construction of entirely new properties. It posits qualities that will vary continuously through a range of values. In this way, it gives birth to 'variables' and 'parameters': It engenders notions like 'length,' 'mass,' 'velocity,' and 'temperature.' And since these notions meet the logical conditions necessary for internal ordering into series -- since they incorporate such attributes as internal uniformity, continuity, and divisibility into equal parts -- they may be 'scaled,' now, into the exact intervals that will coordinate with the progress of real numbers ..." Your insights have given me a whole new standpoint from which to question scientistic dogma.
